Stephen Beynon, CEO Of OneWeb Steps Down

Stephen Beynon, the CEO of OneWeb, has announced his resignation, marking a significant development just under a year after the company’s merger with France’s Eutelsat.

This move comes amid a transition period for OneWeb, founded in 2012 by Greg Wyler with the ambitious goal of providing global internet coverage via low earth orbit satellites.

The company’s journey has been marked by triumphs and challenges, with 2020 proving to be a particularly tumultuous year. OneWeb faced major financial difficulties and ultimately filed for bankruptcy after losing support from its major investor, SoftBank. Despite these setbacks, the company has continued to forge ahead in its mission to connect the world through innovative satellite technology.

Following the merger with Eutelsat, Beynon, who was formerly a columnist for Business Matters, took on the role of CEO of OneWeb and co-president of Eutelsat’s connectivity division. His leadership and strategic vision were pivotal in steering the company through the complexities of integration and transition.

With Beynon’s forthcoming departure, Cyril Dujardin, who currently serves as co-president alongside Beynon, will assume full control of Eutelsat OneWeb. As a French national, Dujardin is expected to bring a new perspective and direction to the company.

Amidst these changes, questions arise about the future of OneWeb’s UK operations. The search for Beynon’s successor is underway, signalling a new chapter for the company’s leadership and strategy. As the industry watches with anticipation and hope, it is clear that OneWeb remains committed to its mission of providing global connectivity and navigating the ever-evolving landscape of satellite technology.
