Tanzania: Idris Elba’s Want To Revolutionising East African Cinema With Zollywood

August 5, 2024
Reading Time: 2 mins read
A A

Idris Elba, the charismatic British actor with roots in Sierra Leone and Ghana, is expanding his reach beyond Hollywood to the East African coast. Specifically, he is embarking on a groundbreaking project in Zanzibar aimed at launching a film studio named Zollywood, which has the potential to rival the renowned film industries of Hollywood, Nollywood, and Bollywood.

This ambitious endeavour is poised to revolutionize the film industry in East Africa and holds significant promise for the region. Zanzibar, known for its cultural richness and scenic beauty, will soon be home to this state-of-the-art film studio, as Elba has secured land and government approval for the project.

Embracing his African heritage, Elba’s vision for Zollywood extends beyond being just a film studio. It encompasses building an ecosystem that nurtures talent, supports filmmakers, and brings African stories to a global audience. By investing in infrastructure, training, and empowerment, Zollywood aims to usher in a new era of African cinema.

The establishment of Zollywood signifies a monumental shift in East Africa’s film industry, offering opportunities for local talent, job creation, and international collaborations. This studio will serve as a catalyst for authentic storytelling, allowing East African voices to share their narratives on a global platform under the guidance of a figure like Idris Elba.

Led by Zanzibar’s investment minister, Shariff Ali Shariff, the announcement of Zollywood at the Zanzibar International Film Festival emphasizes its potential to emulate the success of major film industries. Zanzibar’s strategic location, cultural diversity, and picturesque landscapes position it as an ideal destination for filmmakers seeking unique settings and narratives.

With the anticipation building for the inaugural film from Zollywood, it is evident that the future of African cinema is bright and that a new home has been found in Zanzibar.
