The first Zanzibar Global Health Film Festival, taking place from 13-15 September, is a collaborative effort with WAJAMAMA, a women-led NGO and healthcare centre in Zanzibar.
The festival will spotlight the urgent and significant issue of maternal and child health, showcasing compelling stories from around the world that align with the priorities of WAJAMAMA. The lineup includes previously featured films from the Global Health Film Festival, as well as recent local productions.
Notable films include the African Premiere of “WOMENstruate,” a documentary that delves into the experiences of seven women from Africa and their encounters with menstruation, addressing the taboo surrounding this topic.
Nafisa Jiddawi, CEO of WAJAMAMA, expressed her excitement about partnering with the Global Health Film Festival, citing the power of storytelling to transcend language barriers and spark empathy. Gerri McHugh, the Founder and Director of Global Health Film, emphasized the impact of film in fostering understanding and compassion for global health issues.
The festival will feature in-person screenings and expert discussions in Zanzibar Town, with select program elements available on-demand and via livestream for international audiences.
