South African Movies Boosted By Streamers – Report

July 21, 2024
Reading Time: 2 mins read
A A

The South African film industry has undergone a significant transformation due to the increasing popularity of streaming services. The recently concluded 6th Joburg Film Festival has demonstrated the power of streamer funding in bringing local stories to the forefront of global cinema, as seen in the film ‘Snake’.

Produced by Known Associates Entertainment, ‘Snake’ tells the story of a young girl named Stella who confronts a stranger threatening her community. The film received pre-license funding from eMedia, e.tv’s eVOD, and Amazon’s Prime Video, giving a platform for smaller yet universally relatable stories.

The film’s dedication to authenticity extends to the meticulous preparation of its young star, emphasizing the importance of presenting the reality of impoverished communities with sensitivity and respect.

The success of ‘Snake’ highlights the evolving dynamics within the South African film industry as streaming services continue to invest in local content. This trend encourages filmmakers to explore diverse narratives that resonate with local and international audiences while challenging the industry to elevate its storytelling techniques. The sector can broaden its scope by embracing unique, locally grounded stories that can compete globally through their authenticity and relevance.

‘Snake’ marks a milestone for South African cinema, showcasing the growing influence of streaming platforms in shaping the future of filmmaking. As the industry continues to navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by this digital revolution, the success of such projects offers a hopeful glimpse into a more inclusive and diverse cinematic landscape.
