The bustling city of Johannesburg, South Africa, was the setting for the Radio and Digital Sound Summit on June 18-19, 2024. The summit, a convergence of industry leaders, innovators, and professionals, served as a dynamic platform to discuss and shape the future of radio and digital broadcasting.

Mr. Stanley B. Similo, President of the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA), emphasised the imperative for broadcasters to embrace technological advancements to remain relevant in the digital age. He shared the future vision for SABA, highlighting plans to integrate more digital platforms, like radio, to enhance audience engagement and content delivery, ultimately leveraging cutting-edge technology to broaden their reach.

Mr. Benjamin Pius, CEO of Broadcast Media Africa (BMA), delivered a compelling presentation on the latest findings from BMA’s radio research. Benjamin provided data-driven insights into listening trends, audience preferences, and the impact of digital media on traditional radio. The research presented underscored radio stations’ need to utilise digital tools to maintain and expand their listener base in a competitive landscape.

Noto Modungwa, Business Development Manager at Sentech, introduced Freevision, a new Over-The-Top (OTT) platform aimed at democratising media consumption. Freevision offers free-to-air content accessible via the internet, eliminating the need for expensive subscriptions or advanced technical knowledge. Modungwa highlighted the platform’s potential to provide diverse and high-quality content to a broad audience.

Maritsa Wessels, Head of Strategic Capabilities at Medamark, captivated the audience with her presentation on streamlining systems and processes for digital radio. Wessels emphasised the importance of integrating advanced technologies and efficient workflows to enhance operational capabilities. She argued that leveraging data analytics and automation can improve efficiency and deliver a more personalised and engaging listener experience.

Ncebakazi Manzi, Spotify’s Podcast Manager, explored the evolving landscape of podcasting and its potential to complement traditional radio. Manzi highlighted the unique challenges and opportunities of podcasting, emphasising the need for innovative content creation and effective audience targeting. She pointed out the symbiotic relationship between radio and podcasting, encouraging broadcasters to leverage podcasts to reach wider audiences.

The Radio and Digital Sound Summit 2024 successfully bridged the gap between traditional and digital broadcasting. The event fostered a rich exchange of ideas and strategies, showcasing the radio industry’s innovative spirit and adaptability. With expert presentations and discussions, the summit provided attendees with valuable insights and practical knowledge to navigate the future of radio and digital sound. As the industry continues to evolve, such events will play a crucial role in shaping its trajectory, ensuring that radio remains a vital and dynamic medium for years to come.
