MultiChoice To Bring New Drama Series – Queen Modjadji To Life

In South Africa, MultiChoice and M-Net are set to release a new historical drama series called Queen Modjadji on Mzansi Magic. The series is inspired by the Balobedu legend of Queen Modjadji, who was known for her ability to summon rain and whose bloodline has ruled Southern Africa’s Lobedu clan for centuries.

Produced by Rhythm World Productions and Duma Ndlovu, the series will showcase the story of a matriarchal dynasty and its ability to transform the clouds and summon the rain, making the Balobedu royalty one of the most revered African dynasties. This series continues MultiChoice’s strategy to drive home-grown and authentic African storytelling, following the success of their first epic historical series, Shaka Ilembe.

According to Nomsa Philiso, MultiChoice CEO for general entertainment, Queen Modjadji meets the audience’s desire for television entertainment drawn from African heritage. The production of the series is already well underway, and the team behind it has been consulting with key stakeholders, tribal leaders, and academic experts.

As scripting and casting for Queen Modjadji nears completion, the series is expected to feature a strong episodic storyline and historical details set under unpredictable skies, where rain or storm echoes what is happening in the lives of those below. Duma Ndlovu says that the story of Queen Modjadji explores the connection between the earth, elements, and energy of humans, both physical and spiritual, obvious and unseen.

The series is expected to be entertaining and informative and will be made in African languages. Principal photography for Queen Modjadji will be starting soon.
