M-Net Takes Final Shaka iLembe Season To Global Buyers As Zulu King

M-Net is taking the third and final season of its acclaimed historical drama Shaka iLembe to international buyers under a new title, Shaka iLembe: Zulu King, with STUDIOCANAL handling distribution sales outside Africa.

First-look images released in early October indicate an early 2027 return on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161. The final season will centre on the events surrounding the 1828 assassination of Shaka kaSenzangakhona, bringing the series’ story of the Zulu kingdom to its conclusion.

The international retitling is a notable commercial move. While the series has retained its Zulu-language title across its first two seasons on the South African pay-TV platform, the Zulu King subtitle gives international buyers a more immediately recognisable description of the series and its central historical figure.

The move reflects a broader effort by African premium drama producers and distributors to package locally rooted stories for international audiences while retaining their cultural identity.

Bomb Productions remains behind the series, with Desiree Markgraaff, Nomzamo Mbatha and Angus Gibson serving as executive producers. Mbatha also reprises her role as Queen Nandi. New cast additions for the final season include Lerato Mvelase, Aiden Scott, Conrad Kemp and Wonder Ndlovu.

The third season is expected to follow the format of the first two seasons, with 12 episodes planned.

For Africa’s premium drama sector, the international sales campaign will provide an important test of how high-end African historical productions can translate into overseas licensing opportunities. The success of the sales launch will ultimately depend on whether interest from international buyers converts into territory-by-territory deals.

M-Net has not yet confirmed a specific South African premiere date beyond the early 2027 broadcast window.
