Angola Cables Upgrades Transatlantic Network To 800Gbps, Strengthening Connectivity

Angola Cables is upgrading capacity across its two major transatlantic submarine cable routes, targeting end-to-end services of up to 800Gbps between southern Africa, Brazil and the United States.

The upgrade covers the 10,556km MONET system linking the United States and Brazil, as well as the 6,165km SACS system connecting Brazil and Angola.

The network modernisation uses Ciena’s Waveserver platform with WaveLogic 6 Extreme coherent optics, alongside the 6500 Reconfigurable Line System and Navigator control suite. Together, the technologies are designed to increase the capacity, flexibility and operational control of the existing subsea infrastructure.

Angola Cables chief technology officer Adriano Caldevilla said the investment is intended to increase the scale, flexibility and intelligence of the company’s subsea network as customers prepare for growing AI-driven connectivity requirements.

The project represents a capacity upgrade rather than the construction of a new submarine cable. Angola Cables identifies hyperscaler, cloud and artificial intelligence traffic as key drivers of demand for additional capacity across the route.

The upgraded corridor is expected to deliver round-trip latency of approximately 130 milliseconds between Luanda and the United States, adding greater capacity to a west-facing connectivity path linking southern Africa with the Americas.

For broadcasters and media companies, the upgrade could support higher-capacity contribution feeds, cloud-based media workflows and remote production between Africa and the Americas. It also provides additional network headroom on an alternative route to the more established northbound connectivity paths through Europe.
