MultiChoice is set to introduce its most significant DStv product overhaul in 15 years, expanding access to some of South Africa’s most popular entertainment and sports content from 17 September.
The new package structure is designed around changing viewing habits, offering customers clearer package choices, broader access to content, and greater value across the DStv line-up.
“Our focus is on giving subscribers better value and access to the entertainment and sport they love,” said Willington Ngwepe, CEO of MultiChoice. “DStv’s strength is the combination of South African entertainment, leading international content and unrivalled live sport in one place.”
Ngwepe said the company had taken a fresh look at its package structure for the first time in 15 years, with the new line-up designed to better reflect how customers consume content today and to provide more tailored options for entertainment and sports audiences.
Under the new structure, some of DStv’s flagship entertainment channels, including M-Net, kykNET and Mzansi Magic, will become available at more accessible price points.
The Starter package will add 10 channels, including Wethu+, SuperSport KICKOFF and kykNET & Kie. Wethu+ brings together Mzansi Bioskop, Mzansi Wethu and Mzansi Music, offering a mix of local stories, movies, music and selected PSL weekend fixtures.
Select will become the new home of Mzansi Magic, the PSL and DStv’s full range of children’s channels. This will give more subscribers access to popular local programming, including shows such as Nyala O and Inimba, alongside every PSL match.
MultiChoice is also introducing Movies & Series, a new entertainment-focused package featuring M-Net, kykNET, premium movie channels, Discovery Channel and BBC Earth, alongside 10 sports channels and full PSL coverage.
The company is also refreshing its movie offering through M-Net Movies+, M-Net Stars and M-Net Legends, providing subscribers with a broader selection of blockbuster films, faster access to new releases and fewer repeat screenings.
Two new channels, France 24 and Church TV, will also join the DStv platform from 17 September. France 24 will provide 24-hour international news in English, while Church TV will offer faith-based programming.
Sports fans will also have greater choice under the new package structure.
The new Sports package has been designed specifically for sports audiences and will feature 17 channels covering every PSL, Premier League and UEFA Champions League match. The package will also include cricket previously available only on Premium, local rugby and action sports.
Full PSL coverage will move to Select, while Starter customers will gain access to additional live football through SuperSport KICKOFF, including selected PSL and Premier League matches as well as full La Liga coverage.
Premium will remain DStv’s most comprehensive package, combining the content available on Sports and Movies & Series with additional sporting rights, including Springbok and international rugby, Formula 1, MotoGP, tennis and major golf tournaments.
MultiChoice said its relationship with CANAL+, now the parent company of MultiChoice Group, will further support its ability to strengthen its content offering for South African audiences.
The relationship gives MultiChoice access to CANAL+’s international scale, content partnerships and more than three decades of experience across Africa.
“MultiChoice has built an extraordinary connection with South African audiences and a deep understanding of the stories they love to watch,” said Nomsa Philiso, EVP Content, CANAL+ Africa.
She added that CANAL+ shares MultiChoice’s commitment to African storytelling and is increasing investment in local production and the global distribution of African content.
Premium will also be offered on a new 24-month contract at R799 per month, inclusive of the Access Fee.
Existing DStv customers will not need to take any action as the new packages are introduced. During September, Access, Family, and Compact subscribers will automatically transition to Starter, Select, and Sports, respectively.
EasyView, Compact Plus and Premium customers will remain on their existing packages but will have the option to move to the new line-up.
The new packages will officially launch on 17 September alongside the DStv Expect+ campaign, which will introduce a refreshed visual identity and highlight what subscribers can expect from the new DStv offering.
