YouTube Film ‘Shut Up, Men Are Talking!’ Set For South African TV Debut

Independent South African film Shut Up, Men Are Talking! is heading to television after Movie Room acquired the rights to the feature, which first built its audience through YouTube.

The film will make its national television debut on 31 August 2026 at 8 pm on Movie Room, channel 113 on DStv. The screening will also serve as the final feature of the channel’s Women’s Month campaign.

The acquisition marks the first time Movie Room has picked up a South African-produced film, as the channel looks to expand its relationship with independent filmmakers and bring more locally produced stories to television audiences.

Movie Room Chief Content Officer Pulane Tshabalala said South Africa has a strong pool of independent filmmakers whose stories deserve to reach wider audiences. She described the acquisition as an important first step in the channel’s move into the country’s feature film space.

Written and independently funded by Chris Q Radebe, Shut Up, Men Are Talking! initially found its audience through YouTube, where it reportedly attracted more than 10 million views during its first month.

The film centres on Nontobeko, a young widow who pushes back against the expectations placed on women in a patriarchal society. Her story explores the pressure to conform to traditional ideas around gender and cultural norms while she fights for the freedom to make her own choices.

The film also looks at relationships, family and gender dynamics, using Nontobeko’s experiences to examine some of the challenges women face within their communities.

The cast includes Jo-Ann Reyneke, known for Bad Influencer; The Wife actor Wiseman Mncube; Gomora’s Thulane Mstweni, as well as Zikhethelo Zondi and Lungelo Mpangase.

For Radebe, the move from YouTube to national television gives the independently produced film a much wider platform. For Movie Room, the acquisition signals an interest in exploring locally produced content and creating more opportunities for independent South African filmmakers to reach mainstream audiences.
