Mozambique is looking to artificial intelligence (AI) as a potential driver of growth in its cultural and creative industries, with officials highlighting opportunities to support innovation while protecting the country’s cultural identity.
According to INTIC chairman Lourino Chemane, AI could broaden access to cultural content, support translation efforts, protect cultural heritage and drive growth in the creative economy.
He stressed, however, that the technology needs to be used responsibly. According to Chemane, ethical and transparent approaches will be important to protect creators’ rights, cultural identity and the economic value of creative work.
His comments came during a national dialogue titled “Culture: Identity, Rights and Economy”, held at the Mozambique-China Cultural Centre in Maputo. The event focused on the role culture can play in the country’s development while examining issues around cultural rights, identity and the economic value of creative industries.
AI also brings several challenges for the sector. Chemane pointed to concerns around copyright, intellectual property, the use of cultural data and the transparency of algorithms as adoption of the technology increases.
INTIC said Mozambique’s approach aligns with its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which provides a framework for the responsible development and adoption of AI.
Chemane said the country would need coordinated efforts and practical technology solutions to make the most of AI’s potential. He also highlighted the importance of cooperation between government, creative professionals, universities, businesses and local communities.
He noted that bringing different stakeholders together could help Mozambique navigate AI’s challenges and maximise its benefits for culture and creativity.
Mozambique wants to explore AI’s potential without compromising its cultural identity. INTIC said a stronger focus on local culture could help ensure the technology supports creators and keeps the country’s heritage alive for future generations.
