Ethiopia Enhances Media Collaboration With TV BRICS

The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), one of the largest state-owned media entities in Ethiopia, has officially joined the international media network formed by TV BRICS, further solidifying the country’s involvement with BRICS nations. The cooperation agreement was signed by Janna Tolstikova, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of TV BRICS, and Biniyam Ero Jimma, CEO of EBC, during a ceremony that underscored a shared commitment to fostering media collaboration.

This partnership aims to facilitate content exchange and collaborative efforts in media production, enhancing Ethiopia’s representation and visibility on international platforms. Through this alliance, EBC will gain direct access to timely information on activities in other BRICS member states, enabling the promotion of Ethiopia’s agenda globally.

Molalign Melesse, Deputy CEO and Chief of Staff at EBC, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “EBC, as a broadcaster of a member of BRICS, is glad to work in cooperation with TV BRICS. We are eager to engage in content sharing, experience sharing, and expert exchanges, which will help our journalists perform their duties more effectively.”

Founded in 1935 as Ethiopian Radio and later establishing Ethiopian Television (ETV) in 1962, EBC operates under the Ethiopian government and is headquartered in Addis Ababa. The corporation provides comprehensive coverage, including current affairs, educational programs, sports, and entertainment, across multiple formats, including several radio stations and various television channels. Most of its programming is presented in Amharic, alongside segments in other languages such as Oromo, Somali, and Tigrinya.

Yulia Nazarkina, Head of the Africa Division at TV BRICS, highlighted the importance of collaboration among media organisations from BRICS nations and those in the Global South. She noted that such partnerships play a crucial role in developing an objective international news agenda and fostering humanitarian and economic ties. The collaboration will also enrich the BRICS+ agenda by showcasing Africa’s cultural diversity and business potential through unique television content.

In addition to its partnership with EBC, TV BRICS has established collaborations with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), and the University of Gondar. Across Africa, media organisations from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tunisia, and South Africa have also formed partnerships with TV BRICS, enhancing communication and collaboration on the continent.
