CAIRO, Egypt – At a press conference in Cairo following the CAF Executive Committee meeting, CAF President Patrice Motsepe spoke about the controversy surrounding the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 tournament final.
This comes after the CAF Appeal Board made a major ruling, changing Senegal’s initial 1-0 victory over Morocco to a 3-0 win for Morocco, crowning them the tournament champions.
In his address on the issue, the CAF President emphasised the need to respect the independence of CAF’s judicial structures, even in the face of personal disagreement.
“There are decisions taken by CAF judicial bodies that I may not agree with as a football fan,” said the CAF President in his address on the issue.
He reiterated his organisation’s commitment to abiding by its statutes and those of FIFA, stating that these guidelines are critical to ensuring stability and trust in Africa’s football leadership.
The case began after events in the last match on January 18, 2025, which included a stoppage-time penalty and disruptions that led to Senegal’s forfeiture. The case has now been taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the Appeals Board ruled in Morocco’s favour.
Motsepe has stated that his organisation will abide by the CAS’s final decision. “CAS is the highest authority in global sports arbitration. We will implement its decision without exception.”
