Ghana: MTN To Phase Out 2G And 3G Networks And Services

MTN Ghana has announced its intention to gradually shut down its 2G and 3G networks, allowing subscribers sufficient time to transition to more advanced technologies.

During a recent address at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, Stephen Blewett, the CEO of MTN Ghana, outlined the company’s plan. He acknowledged that many customers still rely on these older services.

Blewett noted that while many users intentionally limit their data usage to 2G and 3G, others are constrained by devices that do not support 4G capabilities. “Despite the broad availability of 4G, many of our customers continue to use 3G. For some, it’s a strategy to control their data consumption, while others remain on older devices,” he explained.

He emphasised that MTN is committed to enhancing spectrum efficiency and that the eventual discontinuation of older networks will be approached with careful planning and sensitivity to customer needs.
