Ethiopia: Ethio Telecom Unveils Ambitious Strategy To Boost Digital Connectivity And Revenue

In a significant move to enhance digital connectivity, Ethio Telecom, the state-owned telecommunications company in Ethiopia, has launched an ambitious three-year growth strategy to boost revenue by an impressive 45.5% while accelerating the country’s digital transformation.

The initiative, titled “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028 Strategy,” builds on the company’s recently concluded LEAD Growth Strategy (2022–2025), which achieved notable increases in subscriber numbers, mobile money usage, and infrastructure development.

Frehiwot Tamiru, CEO of Ethio Telecom, emphasised its commitment to expanding beyond mere connectivity into more comprehensive digital platforms and ecosystems, reinforcing its ambition to become a regional leader in digital services.

“We are thrilled to introduce our new, human-centric growth strategy,’ The NEXT HORIZON: Digital and Beyond 2028 Strategy.’ This roadmap is designed to redefine our contribution to Ethiopia’s digital advancement and promote sustainable and inclusive growth across Africa,” Tamiru stated.

Ethio Telecom plans to increase its subscriber base to 100 million and expand its mobile money service, Telebirr, to 75 million users, with a target revenue of US$14.3 billion by 2028. The operator also aims to enhance its 4G LTE Advanced coverage to 85%, complete the transition from copper technology, and introduce AI-powered operational systems.

This growth strategy is based on strong financial performance. Ethio Telecom reported a pre-tax profit of US$1.29 billion for the fiscal year ending June 2025, marking a remarkable 80% increase from the prior year.

Tamiru is counting on rising data consumption and increased adoption of Telebirr to fuel the anticipated 45.5% revenue growth in the current fiscal cycle. She highlighted the strategy’s human-centric approach, which promises to create numerous job opportunities while delivering long-term social and economic benefits.

By the conclusion of this strategy, Ethio Telecom will serve over 100 million customers and enhance Ethiopia’s position within the African digital ecosystem. This initiative embodies growth, sustainability, and inclusivity,” she remarked.

Tamiru is optimistic that the Next Horizon strategy will strengthen Ethio Telecom’s role as the backbone of Ethiopia’s digital landscape while positioning it for deeper regional integration and future competitive challenges.
