YouTube Embraces AI To Refine Search Experience And Boost Content Discovery

YouTube has introduced two new AI features designed to enhance search and content discovery on the platform, underscoring its commitment to machine learning despite ongoing concerns about AI-generated media.

The first update introduces AI-powered content carousels to select search results, featuring relevant videos with previews and concise, AI-generated summaries.

To illustrate its functionality, YouTube offered the example of someone searching for “best beaches in Hawaii”. Instead of a traditional list, the user would be presented with a curated selection of clips highlighting picturesque snorkelling spots and scenic volcanic shores, complete with brief descriptions and suggestions for further exploration.

These carousels are currently being trialled with YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States. The feature is focused on categories such as shopping, travel, and location-based activities.

The second update takes the form of a conversational AI assistant, which appears as an ‘Ask’ button beneath select videos. This chatbot allows viewers to engage with content more interactively by asking questions related to the video’s subject matter, clarifying concepts, or seeking recommendations for similar material, all without needing to exit the viewing screen.

While initially exclusive to Premium members, the chatbot is now being gradually rolled out to a broader user base in the U.S., including non-subscribers.

Despite YouTube’s enthusiasm for these innovations, not all reactions have been favourable. Some users argue that the platform’s focus on AI detracts from its commitment to human creators. One comment on the feature announcement, by user JCM718, captured this sentiment bluntly: “We’d rather you stop allowing AI slop on the platform, focus on real creators, and get the bots out of the comments. We don’t need a search carousel. It’s hard to find things because you embrace this crap technology.”

Nevertheless, YouTube maintains that further AI-powered enhancements are in development and will be unveiled soon. The company appears confident that such tools will enrich the user experience—whether the broader community agrees remains to be seen.
