Radio: Embracing The New Digital Audio Frontier – A View From IONO FM’s COO

As the convenors of the around-the-corner “Radio and Digital Sound Broadcasting Summit – Africa 2025”, get ready to welcome the industry to Johannesburg, South Africa, Mr Francois Retief, Chief Operating Officer at IONO FM – who is one of the senior executives that will be participating at this annual convention – shares his thoughts on the digital evolution of audio broadcasting and what fellow participants can expect from this high-impact industry gathering.

Francois Retief shared the significance of this industry Convention, which he sees as a key platform for radio and digital broadcasting decision-makers. He said,  “This summit consistently attracts high-level decision-makers from the radio and digital broadcasting sectors. “Based on previous experiences, it’s always been well worth attending for the strategic insights and valuable connections.”

In a season characterised by audience fragmentation and growing platform diversity, Francois Retief identifies some key trends shaping the future of radio and digital sound broadcasting. He states broadcasters must adopt intelligent and effective digital audio strategies to stay competitive in an increasingly crowded advertising space.

Additionally, tightening regulations around personal data—alongside the rapid growth of podcasting and digital audio ad spending—are creating a compelling value proposition for broadcasters. Retief emphasises that radio’s ability to deliver content-driven, contextual advertising offers a distinct advantage over programmatic digital ad models that rely heavily on personal data.

Retief believes forward-thinking broadcasters across Africa are already capitalising on these factors.

Despite the opportunities, Francois Retief cautions that African broadcasters face persistent hurdles. “Technology access, infrastructure development, and affordability are still significant challenges,” he notes. “The key lies in finding the right technology partners with practical, scalable solutions.”

Retief also highlights several organisational challenges broadcasters must navigate in the digital era. These include the internal adoption of new technologies, adapting content effectively across different platforms—such as distinguishing between live streams and on-demand audio—syndicating content to preserve its value and building or integrating into robust advertising networks that can drive sustainable revenue.

Francois Retief will speak and participate in panels at the Radio Broadcasting Convention, which will be held from June 24 to 25, 2025.
