South Africa: DStv Premium Beats Other Sports Streamers In Cost Comparison

March 27, 2025
Reading Time: 2 mins read
A A

According to reports seen by BMA, MultiChoice’s DStv Premium subscription, priced at US$43.73 per month, is unmatched in sports content. The combined cost of international streaming services to match its offerings exceeds US$ 109.47 monthly.

Many of these services aren’t available in South Africa, requiring users to bypass geoblocking, which violates the terms of service and constitutes piracy. Thus, while there are alternatives, they primarily underscore the value of SuperSport. Despite ongoing criticism about its pricing, DStv Premium delivers exceptional value through extensive live sports coverage. With 20 SuperSport channels and two ESPN channels, it caters to various sports fans, featuring dedicated football, cricket, rugby, golf, and more channels. Seven of these channels are exclusive to DStv Premium.

Recently, DStv reintroduced a dual-stream feature for Premium, Compact Plus, and Compact packages. This feature allows two users in the same household to watch different content simultaneously, enhancing flexibility for sports fans.

A study shows that subscriptions to seven international services comparable to DStv Premium total US$113.85 per month—over two and a half times higher. Among these, Disney+ Hotstar Super is the cheapest at US$5.47 (US$1.15) per month but is blocked. F1 TV Pro offers Formula 1 content for US$5.9 per month, while DAZN Premium covers combat sports for US$8.21 ESPN+ is priced at US$11.99 monthly but doesn’t cover all major tennis events, which ATP Tennis TV addresses at US$16.86 per month. Sky Sports and Stan Sport provide extensive rugby coverage but come at a premium, with Stan Sport at US$0.63 and Now TV at US$45.05, the latter requiring an additional fee for ad-free and HD streaming.
