Mozambique Authorities Shuts Down Rádio Encontro – Report

February 13, 2025

In Mozambique, Rádio Encontro, a Nampula-based radio station affiliated with the Catholic Church, has been ordered to cease operations by Mozambique’s Communications Institute. The decision, made on February 11, cites concerns that the station’s frequency was causing interference with aeronautical mobile services. The management of Rádio Encontro is currently seeking further clarification regarding the shutdown.

Established in 1995, the radio station has developed an editorial stance that is often critical of the government. Following the closure, Father Benvindo de Jesus Tapua, director of Rádio Encontro, expressed surprise at the abruptness of the decision. He stated that the management had not received any prior warning before the shutdown took effect.

In an interview, Father Tapua indicated that they were in discussions with the National Communications Institute of Mozambique (INCM) regarding a potential link to expand their broadcasting capabilities. He recounts his experience at the INCM, where he aimed to speak with the director but was informed that this procedure was still in progress when he arrived.

“We were caught off guard by the news of the closure,” Father Tapua remarked, emphasizing that they were unaware of any interference issues prior to the shutdown. “It is perplexing that this situation has arisen when we have been broadcasting since 1995.”

When asked whether the radio station’s critical editorial policy had prompted the closure, Father Tapua indicated he had no evidence to support such a notion. He reiterated his intention to seek clarity during an upcoming meeting with the INCM scheduled for February 13. “We have maintained a good relationship with the Nampula delegation and have ensured we fulfil our obligations as a partner station.”

Father Tapua concluded, stating that they remained calm despite the unexpected circumstances. He highlighted the importance of understanding the exact reasons behind this sudden action, reinforcing that the team is awaiting further communication from the INCM before jumping to conclusions about the motivations behind the closure.
