As digital distribution expands, content creators and publishers face growing challenges, including online piracy, unauthorised social media use, illegal live streaming, and emerging questions about using copyrighted material in generative artificial intelligence (AI). These challenges threaten the commercial value of creative assets and highlight the need for stronger rights management, effective enforcement and sustainable licensing strategies.
Against this backdrop, Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) will host an online industry forum, “Protecting Content Value: Practical Copyright and IP Strategies for Content Creators and Publishers,” on Thursday, 3 December 2026, bringing together media executives, content owners, legal professionals and technology specialists to examine how Africa’s creative industries can better protect and monetise intellectual property in an increasingly digital and multi-platform environment.
The forum will focus on practical legal, technological, and commercial solutions that help content owners maintain control of their intellectual property, combat infringement, and maximise revenue opportunities across local and international markets.
Commenting on the importance of the forum, Mr Benjamin Pius, Chief Executive Officer of Broadcast Media Africa, said: “Content is one of the most valuable assets in today’s media economy, yet its value is increasingly threatened by piracy, unauthorised distribution and the rapidly evolving use of artificial intelligence. For Africa’s creative industries to grow sustainably, protecting intellectual property must become a business priority, not simply a legal consideration.
“This forum will provide an important opportunity for industry stakeholders to move beyond identifying these challenges and focus on practical strategies that protect creative work, strengthen rights management and unlock new revenue opportunities. We want to equip content creators and publishers with the knowledge and tools to safeguard their assets, secure fair compensation and build sustainable businesses in an increasingly competitive global content market.”
Participants will explore ways to disrupt illegal live streams of premium sports and entertainment events, enforce territorial licensing agreements despite VPNs and other circumvention technologies, and unlock the commercial potential of archival content through rights audits and renewed licensing opportunities.
The one-day online forum will feature industry presentations, expert-led panel discussions, and networking opportunities, giving participants actionable insights and chances to exchange experiences with peers and specialists across the media ecosystem.
The event is designed for senior media executives, broadcasters, content creators and producers, publishers, legal and business affairs professionals, intellectual property lawyers, rights management and licensing specialists, anti-piracy experts and content security professionals.
Through this initiative, BMA aims to raise awareness of and encourage the adoption of practical intellectual property strategies that protect creative investments, strengthen the content business, and support sustainable growth across Africa’s evolving media industry.
