SABC+ South Africa’s Public Broadcaster Streaming Platforms Hits 3 Million Users

The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) free streaming service, SABC+, has crossed the three million registered user mark.

In a statement, the broadcaster said the milestone cements SABC+’s place as one of the country’s leading digital streaming platforms. “This achievement reflects the growing demand for accessible, locally relevant digital content and marks another important step in the SABC’s digital transformation journey,” it said.

The broadcaster was quick to point out what makes this number particularly meaningful: unlike anonymous web traffic, every one of these registered users is logged in and has given consent, meaning SABC+ is dealing with a known, engaged audience rather than just numbers on a dashboard. That, in turn, lets the platform offer more personalised viewing experiences, while giving advertisers access to reliable, first-party audience data.

“SABC+ brings together live TV, radio, video-on-demand, catch-up content, and interactive digital experiences on a single platform,” the public broadcaster said.

SABC’s head of marketing for platforms and channels, Sibusiso Gumbi, said the milestone is proof that millions of South Africans are choosing SABC+ for quality content. “As our audience continues to grow, so too does our ability to connect brands with engaged viewers through meaningful, data-driven advertising solutions,” Gumbi said.

Looking ahead, the broadcaster said SABC+ will keep expanding its content library, improving the user experience, and finding new ways to create value for audiences, advertisers, and commercial partners alike.
The platform’s growth has accelerated since its relaunch in July 2024. Starting from zero registered users, SABC+ reached one million in under a year. It then climbed to 1.5 million by October 2025, passed 2.15 million in March 2026, and has now reached the three-million milestone.

That 2026 growth has blown past expectations. When the SABC presented its fourth-quarter performance for the 2025/26 financial year before Parliament, it revealed that SABC+ had already reached 2.15 million registered users by 31 March 2026, well ahead of its annual target of 1.4 million.

“We continue to see the growth and the strengthening of the SABC+ platform,” SABC CEO Nomsa Chabeli told Parliament. “SABC+ managed to close out the quarter at 2.15 million users, which means that it exceeded its annual target by 54%.”

With three million users now on board, SABC+ looks set to keep building momentum as one of South Africa’s fastest-growing streaming platforms.
