BMA Feature: Kenyan Organisation Builds Life-Changing Bamboo Wheelchairs for Children

KIJABE, KENYA – A Kenyan organisation is manufacturing custom wheelchairs from locally grown bamboo for disabled children, offering a faster, cheaper alternative to expensive imported wheelchairs.

The project, founded by BethanyKids, integrates local artistry and rehabilitation know-how to manufacture custom wheelchairs for each child. The project aims to address the significant shortage of pediatric mobility aids in Kenya, where imported wheelchairs take months to arrive and are expensive for many families.

“We wanted to reduce the importation time of wheelchairs from outside so that they are available to the children much quicker,” said Joseph Kompe, mobility expert and physiotherapist at BethanyKids Kenya. Wheelchairs need to fit children well; otherwise, an improper fit might cause severe health conditions, such as spina bifida, contractures, and pressure sores.

“Bamboo is lightweight, resistant to rust, strong, and easily repairable,” technicians explained in support of choosing bamboo. “We purchase the bamboo from the locals, while other accessories like wheels and bearings we get locally as well,” explained a technician at the workshop. Wheelchair user Billy Nganga emphasised the revolutionary impact of this project. Previously, high costs were a reason many people lacked mobility. This workshop not only enables the making of affordable aids but also provides mobility for children, giving them the freedom to move and learn.
