The Rwanda Space Agency has officially joined the Augmented Navigation for Africa (ANGA) program, marking a pivotal advancement in enhancing satellite navigation capabilities throughout Africa.
This collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Kigali on May 7, 2026, by Gaspard Twagirayezu and Prosper Zo’o Minto’o. By joining the ANGA program, Rwanda will be part of the Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) initiative, which aims to increase the accuracy, reliability, and availability of satellite navigation services across the continent.
As part of the agreement, Rwanda will establish and operate an ANGA Mission Control Centre, a critical element of the broader navigation infrastructure across Africa. This partnership will facilitate the adoption of ANGA services nationwide, enhancing positioning, navigation, and timing capabilities across sectors including aviation, transportation, agriculture, and infrastructure development.
The Agency leads the Air Navigation Safety initiative in Africa and Madagascar, dedicated to creating a continent-specific satellite navigation solution tailored to Africa’s unique developmental needs.
ANGA officials emphasise that this collaboration underscores a shared commitment to leveraging advanced space technologies to foster social and economic progress across Africa. By including Rwanda in the program, the initiative aims to leverage African expertise and strengthen regional cooperation in deploying essential navigation services.
The integration of Rwanda into the ANGA program is seen as a significant milestone in the long-term goal of establishing a continental Satellite-Based Augmentation System. This system is designed to improve navigation safety, promote innovation, and drive economic growth across the region.
As African nations increasingly invest in space and digital infrastructure, this partnership showcases Rwanda’s emerging role in the continent’s space ecosystem and its dedication to adopting technologies that promote sustainable development and enhance regional unity.
