CinemaWave, a collaborative effort between Bigger Motion from Kenya and Kaze Productions from Rwanda, has officially started distributing Kenyan films to local communities.
The initiative kicked off at the Machakos Social Hall, where the 2018 film ‘Super Modo’ was showcased. This event marks the launch of a long-term partnership to make high-quality African stories accessible beyond traditional urban cinema settings.
According to a statement released by KBC Digital, the initiative aims to ensure that Kenyan films that receive global recognition are readily available for viewing in the country.
“CinemaWave Africa emerged from a common vision shared by Bigger Motion and Kaze Productions to connect international success with local audiences,” the statement noted. “While African films continue to achieve prestigious accolades worldwide, we acknowledge that the true impact lies in how these stories resonate within the communities they depict.”
The screenings are designed to be affordable, promoting accessibility for all demographic groups across Kenya.
“To facilitate this, we offer tickets at a subsidised rate, ensuring that community members from all age groups and backgrounds can participate,” the statement added. “Our goal is to redefine the exhibition of films by focusing on community engagement and cultural relevance. By nurturing these local connections, CinemaWave Africa aims to establish a more inclusive and vibrant film culture throughout the region.”
Chloe Genga, Head of Impact and Distribution at Bigger Motion, expressed the importance of sharing stories within communities at the Machakos event.
“Watching ‘Super Modo’ illuminate the Machakos Social Hall was a powerful reminder of why these narratives are significant, from the laughter shared in the audience to the moments of contemplation,” she stated. “This embodies CinemaWave Africa’s mission: to bring films back to their root communities and cultivate a future where Africans are not only celebrated on screen but also united through a cinematic culture that reflects their identity.”
Following its debut in Machakos, CinemaWave Africa plans to expand its reach with additional screenings and community initiatives scheduled throughout 2026.
