Malawi: Canal+ Commits To Boosting Local Broadcasting And Talent Development

March 16, 2026

During a recent meeting with Malawi’s communications regulator, Canal+ executives expressed their commitment to enhancing African talent and improving access to broadcasting services. This dialogue took place with representatives from the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) in light of Canal+’s recent acquisition of the MultiChoice Group.

The conversation focused on the future of broadcasting in Malawi, identifying opportunities to expand content distribution and generate employment in the media sector. Chancy Gondwe, MACRA’s board chairperson, highlighted the potential for this development to mark a transformative period for Malawi’s broadcasting landscape, offering viewers a more diverse array of television programming.

Gondwe also emphasised the importance of Canal+ adhering to Malawi’s regulatory guidelines, as this would strengthen its local presence.

Mayamiko Nkoloma, the director general of MACRA, voiced concerns from local television stations about the inadequate financial returns they receive when their content is featured on MultiChoice-operated platforms such as DStv and GOtv. Nkoloma urged Canal+ to invest in the nation’s digital and broadcasting infrastructure, particularly to bolster local production capabilities and broaden digital services.

In response, Canal+ executives indicated their willingness to continue discussions with Malawian broadcasters on content monetisation. They argued that local stations already gain significant exposure by being part of regional platforms that cater to audiences across Africa and beyond.

Operating in over 40 countries, Canal+ reaffirmed its commitment to supporting African creatives by investing in local content production and expanding access to its broadcasting services.
