Canal+ Strengthens European Presence With 51% Stake In Lucky Red

In a significant move to strengthen its presence in the European film market, Canal+ Group, through its StudioCanal unit, has acquired a 51% stake in the renowned Italian film producer and distributor Lucky Red for approximately around US$30 million. This acquisition marks Canal+’s first operational base in Italy and is a strategic step to enhance its content offerings and distribution capabilities across Europe.

Lucky Red stands out as one of Italy’s leading independent film companies, known for its impressive portfolio, including popular titles produced for Netflix such as “Belcanto” and “On My Skin.” The company has also successfully distributed global hits, including Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” within the Italian market.

The acquisition is aligned with Canal+’s ongoing initiative to broaden its content library and distribution reach, especially amid fierce competition for intellectual property and the growing trend of consolidation in the film and television industry. This strategic expansion emphasises Canal+’s commitment to delivering high-quality content and enhancing its market position in Europe.

Canal+’s acquisition of Lucky Red adds a vital component to its European footprint, following its earlier investment in French cinema group UGC. With this new partnership, Canal+ is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Italian cinema, unlocking opportunities for ambitious projects and collaborations with established filmmakers.

The two companies are already collaborating on exciting upcoming titles, including Justine Triet’s “Fonda” and “Violette,” directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. This partnership reflects Canal+’s ambition to create innovative cinematic experiences while attracting seasoned talent to the fold.

As Canal+ ventures further into the Italian film market, the industry can expect a wave of new projects and partnerships that will enrich European cinema.
