MTN Group Harnesses AI And Connectivity To Drive Africa’s Digital Transformation At MWC 2026

Africa’s leading mobile telecommunications company, MTN Group, is embracing artificial intelligence, enhancing digital infrastructure, and expanding connectivity as integral elements of its growth strategy moving forward.

Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita highlighted this transformation during his keynote address at MWC Barcelona 2026 this week, outlining the company’s vision to transition from a conventional telecom service provider to a technology-driven platform poised to support Africa’s digital evolution.

In an interview, Mupita emphasised that while the Ambition 2025 strategy laid a solid foundation, the next five years will focus on AI-powered networks, scaling fintech solutions, and improving home connectivity.

“Although AI is still in its infancy for us, it’s already enhancing customer experiences, streamlining our network operations, and boosting workforce productivity. It will play a pivotal role in our growth narrative,” he stated.

MTN, which boasts nearly 300 million subscribers across the continent, made a significant impression at the conference, as Mupita indicated that the delegation aimed to reinforce the company’s position not merely as a telecom provider but as a technological platform leader in Africa.

For the first time, MTN is showcasing its offerings from its own dedicated stand in Hall 4 at the Fira Gran Via, reflecting its aspiration to influence discussions on policy and partnerships regarding Africa’s digital landscape and AI readiness.

In his role as deputy chair of the GSMA, Mupita also met with Spain’s King Felipe VI and President Pedro Sánchez during an inaugural dinner celebrating 20 years of MWC in Barcelona.

Mupita highlighted the significance of these meetings, underscoring MTN’s position as Africa’s premier telecommunications operator.

“Engaging with the King of Spain and the President of Spain during the MWC Barcelona 2026 opening dinner as deputy chair of the GSMA. Grateful to MWC Barcelona and the wonderful people of this city… We had a strong delegation from MTN this year, with a focus on AI and Agentic AI themes,” he posted.

Beyond the high-profile networking, MTN’s agenda is substantial, with the group investing in expanding its fibre, data centres, and tower assets. This includes a significant US$2.2 billion deal to acquire IHS Towers’ African portfolio, a move intended to bolster its control over critical infrastructure.
