The BBC, in collaboration with North East Screen, has officially launched the Digital Accelerator, a nine-month innovative program designed to enhance the digital capabilities of production companies in North East England.
With a substantial US$788,337 investment from both the BBC and the North East Screen Industries Partnership (NESIP), which is financed by the North East Combined Authority and the Tees Valley Combined Authority, this initiative is set to support up to four regional companies. The focus will be on creating and delivering digital-first video content tailored for young audiences aged 16 to 24 on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch.
The initiative was launched during an event at Stockton Arc on Monday, November 3rd, featuring key speakers such as Alison Gwynn, Chief Executive of North East Screen, and Fiona Campbell, BBC Controller of Youth Audiences and Interim Director of Unscripted. The event also included insights from Athena Witter, CEO and Founder of Engine Pop, who shared her expertise on the evolving digital landscape.
The launch event drew production companies, digital creators, freelancers, and regional industry leaders, offering attendees a valuable opportunity to engage directly with the BBC’s commissioning team, learn about the application process, and network with industry experts.
Fiona Campbell stated, “The Digital Accelerator marks a significant step in our commitment to nurturing digital production talent across the UK. By empowering companies in the North East to explore and develop digital-first ideas, we’re investing not just in the region’s creative future but also evolving the BBC’s connection with the 16-24 demographic.”
Lisa Laws, Development Director at North East Screen, added, “The North East is rapidly emerging as a vital production hub, and we are dedicated to supporting our companies in creating bold, impactful digital content that resonates with young audiences. As viewing habits evolve, the Digital Accelerator represents a transformative opportunity for our screen sector, focused on cultivating a future-ready ecosystem that promotes long-term growth.”
Kim McGuinness, North East Mayor, emphasised, “The North East is brimming with creative talent, and the Digital Accelerator program highlights our ambition to support content creators and production companies in thriving within the digital landscape. As audiences increasingly turn to platforms like YouTube and TikTok, we aim to equip our regional companies with the skills and content needed to connect with younger viewers. This initiative reinforces our region’s reputation for both traditional and digital storytelling, paving the way for real opportunities for local talent and ensuring the sustainability of our creative economy.”
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen remarked, “Teesside is gaining national recognition as one of the UK’s fastest-growing regions for digital and creative industries, and we must capitalise on this momentum. By embracing the latest technologies and fostering innovation, we empower our talented businesses, creators, and freelancers to thrive both locally and globally. Initiatives like the Digital Accelerator demonstrate our commitment to establishing Teesside, Darlington, and Hartlepool as leaders in the digital economy, creating pathways for world-class careers here at home.”
The Digital Accelerator is part of the BBC’s broader initiative to enhance production capacity and creative opportunities across the UK, with a focus on building a sustainable digital production ecosystem in the North East.
The program will feature mentorship from industry experts and webinars on audience insights and digital best practices.
To qualify for the program, applicants must be based in the North East or Tees Valley Combined Authorities, possess a solid track record in content production, and demonstrate a commitment to employing at least 50% local creative talent.
