Nigeria: MTN Unveils Move To Expand Fibre Network To 8 Million Homes By 2028

MTN Nigeria has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand its fibre network, aiming to connect over eight million homes by 2028. This initiative is designed to support the federal government’s National Broadband Plan and Digital Economy Policy, which seeks to provide reliable, high-speed internet access to households, businesses, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) nationwide.

The expansion responds to Nigeria’s rapidly growing population, urbanisation, and the increasing demand for low-latency internet connections for data-intensive applications and remote work. To facilitate this, MTN is collaborating with infrastructure providers, state governments, and local contractors to ensure a sustainable rollout of fibre networks.

Additionally, the company plans to incorporate fibre into new housing developments while tackling challenges such as vandalism, right-of-way issues, and network disruptions caused by road construction. MTN has praised the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for recognising telecom infrastructure as a national asset and promoting supportive policies.

Through this initiative, MTN aims to deliver affordable and reliable broadband access, enhancing Nigeria’s digital economy.
