MTV To Shut Down UK Music Channels After Nearly 30 Years

October 13, 2025

A A

MTV, which was originally launched in the United States in 1981, has become a staple of pop culture and is closely associated with significant moments in music history. Iconic events such as the premiere of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the Live Aid concerts in 1985 mark its legacy.

However, since its peak, viewer habits have shifted dramatically, with music videos more frequently consumed on platforms like YouTube and social media rather than traditional television.

After its successful launch in the US, MTV expanded to Europe in 1987 and introduced a dedicated UK channel in 1997. This period also featured notable releases like the “Three Lions” music video by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.

According to a recent BBC report, MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, and Club MTV will cease broadcasting on December 31. Despite this change, MTV HD will continue to operate, focusing on reality programs such as Geordie Shore and Naked Dating UK.

When approached by the BBC, a spokesperson for Paramount, the parent company of MTV, opted not to comment.

Fans on social media have expressed their disappointment, attributing the brand’s decline to a lack of focus on its core identity. One user lamented the “corporate-led decline of what was once the coolest brand ever”. In contrast, others said MTV lost its cultural relevance once it stopped airing music videos. Comments highlighted nostalgia for the 80s channel and frustration towards the focus on reality TV over music content.

Over time, the channel diversified its offerings with original programming, introducing series like Teen Mom UK and Ex On The Beach. Nevertheless, in 2011, MTV completely shifted away from music videos, with music programming primarily relegated to sister channels, except for the annual MTV European Music Awards (EMAs), which are currently on hiatus.

Earlier this year, Paramount paused the EMAs while it pursues a merger with entertainment company Skydance Media. Although a deal was reached in July, the future of the EMAs remains uncertain as decisions are still pending.
