The Egyptian Oscar Selection Committee has officially selected “Happy Birthday,” directed by Sarah Goher and featuring Nelly Karim, as Egypt’s representative for the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards. The film secured its position with nine out of 16 votes, narrowly surpassing its nearest rival, “Refaat Al-Ayny Lelsama.” Other contenders included “Seeking Haven for Mr Rambo,” “Al Hawa Sultan,” “Snow White,” “Sharq 12,” “Dhai… Seerat Ahl El-Dhai,” and “Gawaza Wala Ganaza.”

Goher’s debut film explores the theme of class disparities in contemporary Cairo through the eyes of Toha, an eight-year-old maid employed by a wealthy family. The narrative unfolds around Toha’s quest to throw a birthday party for her best friend Nelly, capturing the essence of childhood innocence while illuminating the social divides that define their lives.

“Happy Birthday” has had a significant impact internationally, premiering at the 24th Tribeca Film Festival on June 5, 2025. The film received three prestigious awards there: Best International Narrative Feature, the Nora Ephron Award, and Best Screenplay in an International Narrative Feature. These accolades have enhanced the film’s visibility leading up to its Oscar submission, positioning it as a formidable contender in the global awards landscape.

The film is shot entirely in Arabic, immersing viewers in the rich tapestry of daily life in Cairo. Seif El Din Khaled’s cinematography and Ahmed Hafez’s minimalist yet poignant editing contribute to the film’s emotional depth.
