Two major telecommunications operators in Gabon, Airtel and Moov Africa-Gabon Télécom, have signed a memorandum of understanding to share their network infrastructure.
The Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation officially announced this agreement following the signing ceremony.
The collaboration is expected to enhance digital services in Gabon, improve network coverage, reduce deployment costs, and optimise investment strategies.
Data from Research from Datareportal indicates that as of early 2025, Gabon had around 3.2 million mobile subscribers and 1.84 million Internet users, resulting in an internet penetration rate of 71.9% of the total population.
Mark Alexandre Doumba, the country’s Minister of Digital Economy, Digitisation, and Innovation, approved the agreement, underscoring the commitment of both telecom companies to bring this initiative to fruition.
The ministry emphasised that this partnership aligns with Gabon’s President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s broader vision, which aims to strengthen the nation’s digital economy and enhance its global competitiveness.
Zouheir Jorio, CEO of Moov Africa-Gabon Telecom, stated, “Our dual objective is to ensure better network availability while limiting the unnecessary proliferation of pylons that can detract from the landscape’s visual appeal.”
Meanwhile, Airtel Gabon’s CEO, Tom Gutjahr, noted, “While we remain competitors, certain realities necessitate collaboration. By sharing telecommunications towers, we can make digital services more accessible and affordable.”
