Burkinabe spokesperson for the Coalition for Monitoring Biotechnological Activities (CVAB), Ali Tapsobo, welcomed the government’s decision to end a malaria research project during a statement in Souroukoudingan on Monday, calling it a ‘wise, responsible and historic’ move.
In his statement, Tapsobo described the move as “wise, responsible and historic,” arguing that the project carried risks for biodiversity and human health. Local residents also voiced concerns, with some questioning the safety and impact of the initiative.
The government formally halted the Target Malaria project on August 22, sealing facilities and preparing samples for destruction. The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation confirmed the decision, citing the need to safeguard public health and protect the environment.
The Video footage captures the reaction of community members and CVAB representatives as they respond to the announcement.
