NBCUniversal To Launch Bravo Africa, Phasing Out E! Channel After 21 Years

NBCUniversal is set to phase out the E! channel in Africa after 21 years of operation. Starting on October 7, the network will be replaced by Bravo, a channel that heavily focuses on reality programming.

The discontinuation of E! marks a disappointing conclusion for the channel, which debuted on DStv in December 2004.

Without any official communication from NBCUniversal to explain the decision, it’s presumed that one or more of the following factors contributed to E! ‘s demise. For some time, E! has been struggling, facing decreasing content investment and a schedule plagued by repetitive programming, outdated shows, and content repurposed from Bravo.

The channel’s last major show, E! News, was also cancelled, leaving E! devoid of its once-vibrant identity.

As part of an overall strategy, NBCUniversal has chosen to eliminate E! as it transitions to the Versant channels, which may or may not be managed by NBCUniversal International Networks. Suppose E! remains available within this new lineup. In that case, it’s unclear whether it will capture the interest of NBCUniversal International Networks because of its diminished relevance as an outdated pay-TV service.

Details regarding the future of E!’s remaining content are uncertain, as NBCUniversal International Networks has not provided any commentary on the subject, despite repeated requests for information.

Hendrik McDermott, Managing Director of Hayu, EMEA Networks & International Direct-to-Consumer at NBCUniversal, expressed enthusiasm about the launch of Bravo Africa in a corporate statement. He stated, “We are excited to launch Bravo Africa with our partners at DStv, enhancing the NBCUniversal channel lineup in Africa with more global franchises that audiences love. Bravo is now synonymous with exceptional reality content.”

Similarly, Byron du Plessis, the CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, remarked, “DStv subscribers who enjoy top-tier reality programming are in for a treat with Bravo Africa. We are thrilled to offer these beloved shows a dedicated home on our platforms. This channel will be accessible to DStv Access subscribers, reinforcing our commitment to enhancing customer value across all packages.”
