The Saudi Film Commission has opened submissions for local filmmakers to have their works considered as the Kingdom’s official entry for the 98th Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category. This move marks a significant milestone for the Saudi film industry.
Previously, the commission selected its nominees through internal processes, but this year’s approach emphasises inclusivity and transparency. The commission has detailed the selection rules and procedures, which include forming a nomination committee, setting eligibility criteria, and outlining submission requirements.
To be eligible, films must have their first theatrical release in Saudi Arabia between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025, and have a commercial run of at least one week. The new nomination committee will comprise independent industry professionals and experts who will evaluate the eligible films according to Academy standards, ensuring the process is fair and unbiased.
This initiative aims to enhance Saudi Arabia’s presence in the global film industry and solidify its standing among international filmmakers. Additionally, the commission is set to participate in the Locarno Film Festival, scheduled from August 6 to 16, 2025, in Switzerland. The festival is celebrated for its focus on experimental and arthouse cinema, providing a valuable platform for Saudi filmmakers to engage with European and global audiences.
