Safaricom, Kenya’s leading mobile network provider, announced a significant achievement: the company has surpassed 50 million customers nationwide.
According to a press release, this milestone is attributed in part to Safaricom’s extensive customer engagement initiative launched last year. This initiative will culminate in its 25th anniversary celebration in October 2025.
As reported by Kenya’s National Bureau of Statistics, the country has a population of approximately 53.3 million. Safaricom boasts that 93.5% of the country’s residents are its mobile subscribers.
“This achievement highlights our strong bond with Kenyans over the past 25 years. As we approach our silver jubilee, we reaffirm our commitment to being a positive force and innovating for our customers,” stated Dr. Peter Ndegwa, Group CEO of Safaricom.
The company notes that its success is deeply connected to the narrative of modern Kenya, characterised by innovation, resilience, and progress.
In addition to its success in Kenya, Safaricom has also made strides in Ethiopia, where it recently announced reaching over 10 million customers as of July 2025. This swift expansion into a new market aligns with Safaricom’s ambition to evolve into Africa’s leading purpose-driven technology enterprise by 2030.
“Our mission has always centred on prioritising our customers, and this achievement is a testament to that commitment. We will focus on enhancing our impact, personalising customer experiences, and advancing Kenya’s digital transformation efforts,” Ndegwa added.
Since its inception in 2000, Safaricom has introduced groundbreaking services, including M-PESA, which has evolved into a robust digital financial ecosystem and has been successfully expanded to seven other African nations.
Moreover, Safaricom continues to enhance mobile connectivity nationwide through its 3G, 4G, and 5G networks while providing high-speed internet access to homes and businesses.
Beyond connectivity and financial services, Safaricom plays a crucial role in shaping the country’s economic and social landscape. In the last financial year alone, the company contributed US$5 billion to the Kenyan economy while supporting over 1.28 million jobs. Furthermore, over 8 million Kenyans have benefited from community initiatives spearheaded by Safaricom and the M-PESA Foundation, which aim to improve access to education, healthcare, and economic empowerment opportunities.
