Multichoice SuperSport Sees Record Growth In Live Sports Broadcasting

SuperSport says it has significantly enhanced its live sports broadcasting, airing over 47,000 hours of coverage from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, marking a 7% increase compared to the previous year.

MultiChoice’s annual financial report for the fiscal year ending March 2025 shows that SuperSport’s programming included an impressive 47,839 hours of live sports, covering 1,029 events during this timeframe.

This growth can be attributed to various high-profile events, including three major ICC men’s tournaments and one women’s tournament, the Summer Olympics, the men’s Euro 2024 football tournament, and 13 Springbok Test matches. SuperSport has emphasised its status as the most comprehensive broadcaster at the Olympic Games in Paris, showcasing 1,200 live events in approximately 2,900 broadcast hours over 19 days through eight dedicated channels.

In football, the network reported strong viewer retention, crediting the accessibility of La Liga in lower-tier packages and additional UEFA Champions League matches for its success. Notably, the Soweto Derby in February 2025 emerged as the most-watched derby of the reporting period.

Rugby viewership also experienced a notable surge, with audience increases of 23% in the United Rugby Championship and 29% in the Currie Cup. The Betway20 T20 cricket competition, in which MultiChoice holds a 30% stake, was celebrated for its growth, achieving a 47% year-on-year increase in local viewership. SuperSport aired 799 hours of the Betway20 across seven dedicated channels, up from 685 hours in the previous season, attracting over 1.3 million unique South African viewers.

New viewership records were established in mixed martial arts during Dricus du Plessis’s second UFC title fight against Sean Strickland. Additionally, SuperSport Schools saw a 46% increase in app users, reaching 1.2 million and achieving nearly 11 million views on the platform throughout the year. This continued growth showcases SuperSport’s emergence as a leading brand in sports and entertainment in South Africa.
