ESPN’s Justin Connolly Swaps Disney For YouTube In Top Global Media And Sports Role

May 27, 2025

A A

After over twenty years of working to define Disney and ESPN’s media footprint, Justin Connolly is bringing his expertise to YouTube, assuming a newly established role as the platform’s Global Head of Media and Sports.

Connolly’s departure from Disney marks a significant leadership shift in the media sector. The former President of Disney Platform Distribution, he presided over its intricate network of third-party distribution, affiliate marketing, and sales for streaming platforms — such as Disney+ — and linear TV networks. A key driver of content deals in general entertainment, film, music, and sports, he is one of the architects of Disney’s modern distribution machine.

Today, YouTube relies on Connolly’s extensive industry background to enhance its relationship with major media companies and global sports leagues. He will manage high-level partnerships, including distribution for YouTube TV, the country’s largest internet-based television subscription service with over 8 million subscribers.

YouTube Chief Business Officer Mary Ellen Coe shared the news in an internal memo that emerged via Bloomberg.

Connolly began at ESPN in 2003 and advanced rapidly through the ranks. He was Director of Strategy and Operations before moving to senior leadership roles overseeing affiliate sales, distribution strategy, and business development. He went on to apply those abilities across Disney’s broader media universe.

Before ESPN, Connolly cut his corporate finance teeth at Disney’s Burbank headquarters. A native Bostonian, he has an Ivy League pedigree with an economics degree and an MBA from Harvard.

With Connolly in YouTube’s corner, the fight for media and sports streaming dominance became much more intriguing.
