As discussions around podcast regulation gain traction in South Africa, the podcasting community has expressed support for the idea and concern about its potential impact on free speech.
Khusela Sangoni Diko, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communication and Digital Technologies, has highlighted that regulating the podcast landscape is not new. Instead, modernising existing legislation in light of contemporary digital innovations is necessary.
This renewed conversation about regulating podcasts was sparked by the controversy surrounding prominent South African podcaster Macgyver’ MacG’ Mukwevho, who faced backlash for making derogatory comments about Minnie Dlamini, a well-known presenter, TV producer, and actress. MacG hosts “Podcast and Chill with MacG,” one of the leading podcasts in the country.
As the call for regulatory measures grows, many are worried that such interventions could stifle diverse voices in the podcasting space. The evolving discussions raise critical questions about balancing the need for accountability with the preservation of free expression.
