
MTN Group has reaffirmed its commitment to Uganda as a key growth hub in its pan-African strategy. A top-level delegation, led by Group Chairman Mcebisi Jonas and CEO Ralph Mupita, visited Uganda this week to engage with national leaders and deepen strategic partnerships.
The visit was part of MTN’s ongoing leadership engagement initiative across African operations, which aims to align business priorities with national development goals. In Uganda, the focus was strengthening collaboration with the government, regulators, and private sector leaders to support digital infrastructure, innovation, and job creation.
A significant moment was a high-level meeting with President Yoweri Museveni at the State House in Entebbe. The President highlighted Uganda’s priority sectors for economic expansion—agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT—emphasising that increased employment and income would enhance digital adoption. He also urged MTN to explore regional investment and trade to promote cross-border integration.
Uganda holds a special place in MTN’s legacy as the first country outside South Africa where the Group secured a telecom licence in 1998. That landmark decision launched MTN’s journey towards becoming one of Africa’s leading digital service providers. Today, Uganda remains a critical market—both commercially and developmentally.
At a stakeholder dinner with senior officials and business leaders, MTN Group Chairman Mcebisi Jonas expressed gratitude for Uganda’s support. “We’re not here for the short term,” he stated. “MTN is invested in Uganda’s long-term success, and we believe there’s great potential for deeper trade and business linkages between Uganda and South Africa.”
The Group’s leadership emphasised that Uganda will continue to play a central role in MTN’s efforts to accelerate digital transformation across the continent. The visit highlighted MTN’s belief in inclusive, sustainable progress built on trusted partnerships, early investment, and a shared vision for Africa’s digital future.
