Africa’s Preparedness For Digital Radio And Audio Services To Be Evaluated At Industry Convention In June 2025

As Africa moves steadily toward a fully digital broadcasting ecosystem, the readiness of various demographic groups to adopt and benefit from digital radio and audio services has become a focal point for policymakers, broadcasters, and industry stakeholders.

This critical issue will take centre stage at the upcoming Radio And Digital Sound Broadcasting Summit – Africa 2025 (6th Edition), which will take place from 24 to 25 June 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The shift towards digital sound broadcasting brings undeniable opportunities: clearer audio quality, broader access to diverse content, and innovative interactive features. However, these benefits hinge significantly on the preparedness of African populations, particularly when accounting for varied socio-economic, infrastructural, and educational realities across the continent.

One of the central challenges in achieving full digital migration is addressing the digital divide that persists between urban and rural communities and between different income groups. While urban centres in countries like South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria are rapidly adopting digital technologies, rural and marginalised populations often face barriers such as limited access to affordable digital devices, inconsistent internet connectivity, and a lack of digital literacy.

Commenting on this, Mr Benjamin Pius, CEO of Broadcast Media Africa, said, “As we envision a fully digital sound broadcasting landscape across Africa, it is essential that we take a people-first approach. Understanding the preparedness of every demographic group—urban or rural, young or old—is crucial. We must ensure that digital radio and audio services are accessible, affordable, and relevant to all segments of society. Only then can we unlock the full potential of digital sound broadcasting in driving connectivity, education, and entertainment across the continent.”

According to organisers, the Summit will feature in-depth presentations and panel discussions examining how broadcasters and regulators can tailor their strategies to accommodate these diverse user needs, ensuring an inclusive transition to digital sound broadcasting.
