State Of Digital Broadcasting Across East Africa – Reviewing The State Of Play

February 20, 2025

As East Africa continues its digital transformation, the broadcasting sector stands at a critical juncture. With digital terrestrial television (DTT), over-the-top (OTT) streaming, and satellite broadcasting playing a growing role in content distribution, stakeholders must assess the progress made, the persistent challenges, and the opportunities for innovation.

At the Broadcast And Digital Media Convention – East Africa 2025, from 27 – 28 May 2025 in Kampala, Uganda, industry leaders, regulators, and content creators will review the current landscape and discuss strategies for accelerating digital broadcasting across the region. Convened by Broadcast Media Africa, Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, and the Uganda Communication Commission, this event will provide a platform for insightful discussions on regulatory frameworks, technological advancements, and market dynamics.

East Africa has made significant progress in digital broadcasting over the past decade, particularly in transitioning from analogue to digital terrestrial television. Countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda have successfully implemented digital migration, expanding access to a broader range of free-to-air channels and enhancing the quality of broadcast services.

Furthermore, satellite and OTT platforms have gained traction, providing audiences with on-demand content and live-streaming capabilities. Mobile penetration has also played a crucial role in enabling digital content consumption, with smartphone users across the region accessing news, entertainment, and educational content through various streaming services.

As stakeholders prepare for this important convention, the conversation around digital broadcasting in East Africa remains crucial. The region has made remarkable strides in its digital transformation journey, but sustained collaboration, policy refinement, and technological innovation will be key to unlocking its full potential.

The Broadcast And Digital Media Convention – East Africa 2025 will serve as a pivotal platform to chart the course for the future of digital broadcasting in the region—ensuring that broadcasters, regulators, and content creators align towards a digitally inclusive and commercially viable broadcasting ecosystem.
