Recently, MTN, China Telecom, and Huawei reached a significant agreement to establish an advanced 5G private network for one of the premier manganese mining companies in the Northern Cape, South Africa.

This accomplishment follows a previous Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed at AfricaCom last year, which aimed to deliver cutting-edge Digital ICT solutions to various African industries.

This unprecedented partnership represents the largest 5G private network in Africa’s mining sector, setting a new standard for intelligent mining practices across the continent.

Implementing 5G technology will revolutionize the mine’s operations, improving productivity, safety, and sustainability.

The private 5G network will offer ultra-reliable, high-speed connectivity, empowering applications such as personnel monitoring, vehicle tracking, and unmanned trucks. These advancements will not only boost operational efficiency but also enhance workplace safety.

In addition to operational improvements, the 5G-enabled smart mine also aligns with global sustainability objectives by fostering environmentally friendly mining practices. By optimizing energy use and resource management, the technology adheres to international environmental standards, positioning this mine as a leader in sustainable practices within the industry.

This initiative also signifies a noteworthy step in advancing the 5GtoB (5G-to-Business) ecosystem, exemplifying a successful collaborative framework among three industry giants. Huawei is delivering a comprehensive 5G private network specifically designed to meet the distinct needs of mining operations. Meanwhile, MTN is contributing its extensive infrastructure and expertise in network integration, and China Telecom is applying its global know-how in various sectors to provide top-notch system integration and innovative digital solutions.

This groundbreaking alliance illustrates the transformative potential of 5G technology in Africa, leading to smarter, safer, and more sustainable mining operations.

The project also emphasizes the role of digital technologies in enhancing resource management and meeting global supply chain requirements.

Reed Zhang, Managing Director of China Telecom South Africa, stated, “This initiative reinforces China Telecom’s leadership in strategic new business areas including Cloud Computing, AI, Security, Digital Platforms, Big Data, Quantum, and Next-Generation ICT.”

“These advancements reflect China Telecom’s dedication to technological innovation and collaborative efforts, empowering Africa’s largest 5G enabled smart mine and fostering the intelligent evolution of the mining industry.”

Sudipto Moitra, General Manager of MTN ICT Converged Solutions, remarked, “5G is not merely about enhanced connectivity; it serves as a catalyst for transforming industrial operations.”

“Our partnership with key collaborators like Huawei and China Telecom illustrates our commitment to advancing Africa’s digital transformation, showcasing the potential of collaborative efforts to unlock new technological avenues.”

“Together, we are fostering innovation in industries and contributing to economic growth within the continent.”

Building on its strategic relationship with Huawei, MTN is swiftly expanding its 5G private network initiatives across various sectors, including mining, oil and gas, ports, manufacturing, and education.

At the same time, MTN is broadening its 5G footprint into additional countries such as Nigeria, Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, and Cameroon, facilitating industrial digital transformation throughout the continent.

Alex Xing, Vice President of Huawei MTN Key Account Department, added, “Our commitment lies in collaborating with MTN and our partners in the industry to accelerate the widespread adoption of 5GtoB solutions throughout Africa.”

“This initiative is a pivotal moment not just for the mining sector but for the broader digital evolution of the continent.”

“By harnessing our advanced 5G technology, we target the acceleration of industry digitalization, promote operational excellence, and empower businesses to tackle future challenges.”

“We take pride in leading Africa’s digital revolution, unlocking new growth opportunities while promoting sustainable development.”
