Nigeria: MTN Group Secures Ten-Year Renewal Of 800MHz Spectrum Licence

Broadcast Media Africa has learnt that MTN Group, Africa’s largest telecoms company, has renewed its spectrum band licence in Nigeria for an extra ten years, effective January 1, 2025.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently announced that it has decided to extend MTN’s first 800MHz spectrum band licence in the country.

It has also approved the extension of the second 800MHz spectrum band licence (Channel 2), which expires on December 31, 2030.

According to the regulator, the extension aims to align the tenure of the company’s 800MHz spectrum licences so that they all expire on December 31, 2034, allowing for easier subsequent renewals.

MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola commended the extension of the 800MHz frequency range, vital for providing efficient mobile services, notably for 4G and potentially 5G networks, which will boost coverage and speed for subscribers.

“This enables us to continue to meet the demand for data and is integral to our broader strategy for enhancing connectivity,” said Toriola.
