Cinema Akil Reopens With Exciting Films And Upcoming Reel Film Festival

Cinema Akil, the prominent independent cinema in the GCC, has reopened its doors after a brief two-week intermission. Located on Alserkal Avenue and adjacent to the 25hours Hotel near the World Trade Centre, the cinema paused operations from December 29 to January 9 but has now returned with an exciting array of films and events.

From January 10 to January 23, the Alserkal Avenue venue will feature two newly unveiled films. “Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo,” an Egyptian production, explores the everyday challenges and violence faced by Hassan, his mother, and their dog Rambo as they navigate the difficult realities of life in Cairo. On the other hand, the Iranian film “My Favourite Cake” tells a heartfelt tale of 70-year-old Mahin, who embarks on a journey to revive her romantic life, culminating in an evening that changes her forever.

Following this, Cinema Akil will proudly host the 11th edition of the Reel Palestine Film Festival from January 24 to February 2. This annual festival is dedicated to showcasing Palestinian narratives and films, although the specific lineup for this year’s event is yet to be revealed.

At the 25hours Hotel venue, a thoughtfully curated selection of films will be screened for free throughout January. Highlights include the classic 1957 film “12 Angry Men,” the 2023 release “Aida Returns,” which portrays a mother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s and her connection to Palestine, and “Four Daughters,” a poignant blend of documentary and fiction that addresses a Tunisian mother’s reaction to the disappearance of her two oldest daughters. The selection will also feature “R21 AKA Restoring Solidarity,” a documentary exploring historical Japanese activism in support of the Palestinian cause.

While film screenings at the 25hours Hotel are free of charge, they do require reservations. Tickets for events at Alserkal Avenue start at AED 52.50.
