Airtel Nigeria Teams Up With Google To Bring YouTube To All TVs

Airtel Nigeria has unveiled a new collaboration with Google to make YouTube accessible on all television sets throughout the nation, including both smart and older analogue models.

The announcement was made in a recent statement following the signing of the partnership at Airtel’s headquarters in Lagos.

As part of this initiative, YouTube will be integrated into Airtel Nigeria’s Smart Router, a device designed to provide internet connectivity while converting regular televisions into smart TVs.

This new feature allows users to access YouTube directly on their TVs, providing a smooth streaming experience for a broad range of content, from movies and sports to music and educational videos.

Femi Oshinlaja, the Chief Commercial Officer of Airtel Nigeria, emphasized the importance of this partnership in transforming digital entertainment in Nigerian households. He stated, “At Airtel, we aim to close the digital divide by offering affordable entertainment content. Through this partnership with Google, we continue innovating the entertainment sector, as the Airtel Smart Router provides a comprehensive solution that combines internet services with easy access to top-notch entertainment through YouTube.”

Femi Adeniran, the Director of Corporate Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility, further explained, “Integrating YouTube into the Airtel Smart Router greatly enhances the customer experience, fundamentally changing how our customers access digital content at home. This collaboration exemplifies our dedication to creating affordable, cutting-edge solutions that enrich our customers’ digital lives.”

The Airtel Smart Router costs US$15.88 and comes with 30 days of unlimited data. It allows families to stream movies, sports events, cartoons, music, and other types of audiovisual content.

Olumide Balogun, West Africa Director at Google, commented, “YouTube has always connected people with the content they love, whether it’s exploring new interests or staying informed. Through this partnership, we’re simplifying access for more Nigerians to enjoy their favourite videos directly on their TVs, allowing more households to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and entertainment YouTube provides. This is an exciting step toward fostering a digitally inclusive Africa.”

Echoing Balogun’s sentiments, Mahesh Bhalerao, Director of EMEA Product Partnerships at YouTube, remarked, “YouTube serves as a platform where culture flourishes and everyone, from creators to viewers, can express themselves and connect with what is important to them. This partnership with Airtel reinforces our commitment to delivering high-quality, on-demand content to more homes while empowering Nigerian audiences to discover, learn, and enjoy YouTube’s diverse experiences.”
