South Africa: MTN Accelerates 5G Network Expansion – According To Reports

September 19, 2024
Reading Time: 2 mins read
A A

MTN is rapidly expanding 5G connectivity in South Africa, with coverage now at 44%, up from 35% earlier this year. This next-generation network offers significantly faster data speeds compared to 4G, reaching up to 100 times faster and enabling quicker downloads, seamless streaming, and real-time applications. One of the key features of 5G is its ultra-low latency, supporting applications like autonomous driving with its rapid data feedback.

MTN’s network modernisation efforts include the deployment of over 1,060 LTE sites to date and the addition of eight towers to the rural KZN network. The company has also made key regional operations appointments and continues to optimise its network for reliability and quality.

In 2024, MTN deployed 5G on more than 900 sites and plans to expand 5G coverage in the country using mid-band spectrum. Additionally, the company is working on proposals for 5G private networks in the mining, manufacturing, education, and logistics sectors.

Despite facing challenges such as vandalism and theft at network sites, MTN is implementing heightened security measures and collaborating with law enforcement to combat these issues. The company has reported 2,000 incidents of vandalism and theft across its sites nationally in the past quarter, with heightened criminal activity in regions like the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern region, and Gauteng.

To drive sustainability, MTN is developing the MTN South Africa Solar Park, featuring a 5MW solar PV installation and a 2MW battery energy storage system. This initiative aims to connect the previously unconnected to the digital world and provide access to various opportunities.

MTN is committed to expanding its 5G network, ensuring network resilience, and driving sustainability initiatives to benefit its customers and the community.
