Broadcast Media Africa has learnt that three Nollywood films have been selected for the 2024 Joburg Film Festival in South Africa. The films Mami Wata, Orah, and All The Colours Of The World Are Between Black and White were chosen from over 60 films from 30 countries to promote relationships between local and international filmmakers.

The festival promises to deliver an interesting blend of films from local and international filmmakers, all set against the vibrant backdrop of Johannesburg. One of the selected Nigerian movies, Mami Wata, is a black-and-white film directed by Cj Obasi. The film’s plot is set in the Iyi village, where the people worship the mermaid deity Mami Wata. However, when the village falls under the control of a warlord and children start dying and disappearing, the two sisters plot to save their people and restore Mami Wata’s glory to Iyi. The film stars Rita Edochie, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Evelyne Ily Juhen, Kelechi Udegbe, and Tough Bone.

Babatunde Apalowo’s film, All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White, tells the story of two men named Bambino and Bawa, who meet in Lagos during a photography competition and develop a deep affection for each other while exploring the city. However, they have to deal with the societal pressures that come with being homosexual. The movie stars Tope Tedela, Riyo David, Martha Ehinome Orhiere, and Uchechika Elumelu. It was written by Apalowo and produced by Damilola Orimogunje.

Orah, directed by Canadian-Nigerian filmmaker Lonzo Nzekwe, follows the life of a taxi driver in Canada on a mission of vengeance against a Nigerian drug trafficking ring responsible for her son’s death. The movie features a talented cast, including Oyin Oladejo, Somkele Iyamah-Idhalama, O.C. Ukeje, Emeka Nwagbaraocha, Kelechi Udegbe, Tina Mba, Lucky Onyekachi Ejim, Ruby Akubueze, Agape Mngomezulu, Morgan Bedard, Oris Erhuero, Femi Lawson, and Christopher Seivright.

The 2024 Joburg Film Festival is set to be a diverse and dynamic event showcasing some of the best films from around the world.
