Ghana: Politician Wants To Establish Dedicated TV Platform For The Creative Industry

In Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to launch a dedicated television station for the creative arts sector if elected on December 7, 2024.

Speaking at a policy dialogue with stakeholders in the creative arts industry on Friday, June 7, 2024, in Accra, the former president of the Republic of Ghana emphasized the need for artists to diversify their revenue streams beyond event ticket sales, particularly through viewing.

“We envision a special channel for the creative arts on digital terrestrial television. This will function as an events channel where artists can exhibit their work. For major shows featuring artists like Stonebwoy or Amandzeba, we will introduce a payment system for viewing through electronic means. This innovative approach will ensure that artists are justly remunerated for their work,” he elaborated.

Mahama also highlighted the significant potential of the creative arts industry to generate employment opportunities for Ghana’s youth, noting that many talented individuals currently lack viable platforms to showcase their abilities.

“The creative arts industry is crucial and can create numerous jobs. There are countless talented young people with no outlets to exhibit their skills. By elevating the creative industry, we can open doors for many youth to thrive,” he added.

In addition to this commitment, President John Mahama outlined other strategies to bolster the creative arts sector in the NDC’s upcoming manifesto, underscoring his dedication to advancing the industry if elected president in 2024.
