David Mugonyi has been appointed the new director general of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) by Eliud Owalo, Kenya’s ICT cabinet secretary.

Mugonyi, who previously worked as the Head of the Presidential Communication Service, is set to begin his new role on January 15th. He boasts over 20 years of leadership experience in the public and commercial sectors.

Mugonyi succeeds Ezra Chiloba, who resigned from the office in October of last year.

CA Board Chairperson Mary Mungai has expressed her confidence in Mugonyi’s ability to excel in his new role, citing his extensive experience and expertise in public service, media, and strategic communications.

“Mr Mugonyi brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role, having amassed 23 years of distinguished service across the public service, media, and strategic communications,” said Mungai.

Mugonyi replaces Ezra Chiloba, who resigned from the post in October 2022, just a few weeks after being suspended for alleged misuse of position and conflict of interest.

The CA regulates various aspects of the ICT industry in Kenya, including telecommunications, cyber security, e-commerce, broadcasting, multimedia, and postal/courier services. The body is also responsible for managing the country’s numbering and frequency spectrum resources, maintaining and administering the Universal Service Fund, and protecting the rights of ICT service customers.
